The line track ensemble came up in the form of the reconstruction of the downtown of Rotterdam after WWII bombardment in May 1940. Over the years these flats were mainly occupied by families with children, who could play on the green outside on the ground floor. However, the apartments were small, and high-rise buildings became less common for families with children, who eventually started moving to outside neighbourhoods more often. In the late 1980s the ‘Lijnbaanflats’ became occupied with young families without children, and it became a national monument.
